Walter Perry Johnson, "The Big Train," produced a monumental record of 417-279 while pitching for the Washington Nationals from 1907 to 1927. He won twenty games in 12 seasons and thirty in two. His lifetime ERA was 2.17, with 3,508 strikeouts and 110 shutouts. Still, it wasn't till the twilight of his long illustrious career, his 18th season, that his Nats made it to the World Series in 1924. After dissappointing performances, losing games one and five, he emerged the series hero by pitching four scoreless innings of relief in the deciding seventh game. Wrote sportswriter Grantland Rice, "Those last four innings of the world series comprise beyond all question the most dramatic stretch that sport has ever known... In the space of two hours, Walter Johnson had come from a lone, dejected and broken figure in the shadows of the clubhouse to a personal triumph that no other athlete had ever drawn in all the history of sport." Johnson was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1936.Others voted into the Hall of Fame as Washington Nationals/Senators or Minnesota Twins are Goose Goslin, Bucky Harris, Sam Rice, Rod Carew, Harmon Killebrew, Bert Blyleven and Kirby Puckett.
