John Wall. After a celebrated high school career, during which, as a senior, he led Word of God High School to a runner-up finish in the North Carolina Class 1A state championship game, John Wall was courted by several universities including Memphis, Miami, N.C. State, Baylor, Duke and Kansas. He committed to attend the University of Kentucky on May 19, 2009. In his first action as a Wildcat, in an exhibition game against Clarion University of Pennsylvania, Wall led his team with 27 points and 9 assists in 28 minutes of playing time.
Wall, along with fellow freshman Eric Bledsoe, DeMarcus Cousins and Daniel Orton and junior Patrick Patterson led the 2009 - 2010 UK Wildcat team to the most dramatic turnaround in NCAA history and in recognition of his achievements Wall was recognized as the 2010 SEC Basketball Player of the Year and a first team All American. Despite the team’s brilliant 35-3 regular season record, the Wildcats were upset and eliminated from the NCAA tournament.
After his freshman year at UK, Wall entered the 2010 NBA Draft and was chosen first overall by the Wizards. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2010 NBA Summer League after averaging a league-high 23.5 points and 7.8 assists, along with 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game in four games played. He was the first player in Vegas Summer League history to lead the league in both points and assists per game.
Off to a strong professional start, John finished second to Blake Griffin in the voting for Rookie of the Year honors.¹
