Chad Javon "Ochocinco" Johnson (born January 9, 1978 in Miami, Florida) was a wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League until he signed with the New England Patriots before the 2011-2012 season. He was originally drafted by the Bengals in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft. He played college football at Oregon State. Signed by the Miami Dolphins prior to the 2012-2013 season, he showed promise in training camp, but was unceremoniously released after an alleged domestic violence charge made by his wife. Prevailing opinion is that Chad wasn't given a chance or a fair hearing and that new Dolphins coach Joe Philbin mishandled the situation. After graduating from Miami Beach Senior High School, Ochocinco attended Santa Monica Junior College, where he was a teammate of future Carolina Panthers star wide receiver Steve Smith. In 2000, Ochocinco transferred to Oregon State University after being aggressively recruited by coach Dennis Erickson. Alongside future Bengals teammate and fellow wideout T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Ochocinco led his team to an 11-1 season and a victory over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl that year.¹
