The magic started on October 20, 1972 with the birth in Long Beach, California of little Calvin Broadus. His mother thought her son bore a resemblance to Charlie Brown's favorite dog and nicknamed him Snoop. Growing up, Snoop was in and out of trouble and he, therefore, spent some quality time in the clink. But, eventually, he managed to redirect his talents and energy to music. He and friend Warren Griffin, now Warren G, began rapping and making homemade tapes. G gave one of these tapes to his half-brother, Dr. Dre, who was so impressed he used Snoop on the soundtrack for the movie Deep Cover. Snoop stole the show on Dre's epic 1992 release Chronic. Nuthin' But A G-Thang, co-written and co-rapped by Snoop, has since been named by Spin Magazine best single of the decade, Chronic, one of the 10 best albums.

Doggystyle, Snoop's eagerly awaited first solo album, was released in 1993 and became the first debut album to hit the charts at number 1. His soundtrack for the short film Murder Was the Case, was released in 1994 and also debuted at number 1.¹
